Jury duty scam hits Howard County

HOWARD COUNTY, Md. - At least four Howard County residents have been contacted about missing jury duty.  The only problem is, they were never scheduled to report.

According to Howard County Police, scammers are contacting citizens of Howard County telling them warrants are out for their arrest for missing jury duty.  The victims are encouraged to pay off their fines over the phone with pre-paid debit cards called Green Dot Reloadable prepaid cards.

Green Dot Reloadable prepaid cards are debit cards with finite amounts of money that cardholders deposit at their discretion.  If the victims don’t have these cards, they are asked to purchase them and share the card number over the phone.

Howard County police reminds citizens they will never demand payment over the phone, and urge residents to take precautions to avoid being scammed.

If you believe you may have been a victim of a telephone scam, call police at (410)313-2200 or file an online police report at hcpd.org.
