ELLICOTT CITY, Md. - Howard County police fatally shot a suicidal man armed with a knife Saturday morning.
The death marks the second police involved shooting in Ellicott city in less than a week. Both shootings involved suicidal subjects.
Shortly after 6:30 Saturday morning, police were called to the 5000 block of Montgomery Road in Ellicott City. A man called 911 twice reporting that a subject with a knife was at the residence and planning to kill the occupants. Detectives believe the calls were made by the suspect himself.
When officers arrived they confronted a man with a knife in the front yard. An officer used a Taser gun on him, but the suspect ran back into the house. Moments later he came back outside armed with a knife and began approaching officers. After warning the man several times to drop the knife, two officers shot him to death, police said. No one else was hurt in the incident.
Family members told police the man had recently been talking about suicide.
An eerily similar scene played out in Ellicott City Wednesday afternoon when a man with self-inflicted knife wounds confronted officers and was shot by police. The man, identified as 45-year-old Darren Friedman died at Shock Trauma.
Both incidents remain under investigation.
