A Reisterstown truck driver pleaded guilty to stealing over $19,000 worth of athletic shoes Tuesday.

The Howard County States Attorney’s Office says 29-year-old Cortney Lynn Slater was charged with one count of theft between $10,000-$100,000.

In July 2016, an employee of New Penn Motor Express discovered that a pallet of New Balance athletic shoes was missing from a trailer.

He reported the shortage to the shipping clerk and said he saw Slater near the shipment that morning, before leaving in a truck.

Dispatch contacted Slater and ordered him to return with the vehicle.

A security manager allegedly spotted Slater near a mall parking lot where he off-loaded the missing pallet behind a dumpster before returning to the terminal.

While being questioned, Slater said a co-worker asked him to take the pallet of athletic shoes and that he would be paid $250 for the theft.

Slater's sentencing date is scheduled for May 15, 2017.  He is free on bond.
