Shots fired in Edgewood Recreational Park

EDGEWOOD, Md. - By day, you normally might hear children at play in Edgewood Recreational Park, but Genevive Blackgoat says when her daughter stepped outside Thursday night to take out the trash, she heard sounds that alarmed her.

"She heard moaning or something.  She heard guns.  She heard some popping, and when the police came up to her, she told them she heard the moaning over on this side."

Responding to an anonymous call reporting the sound of shots fired, Harford County Sheriff's deputies converged on the field behind the Windsor Valley community.

"When deputies arrived they found two victims in the field.  One individual was a 17-year old, Michael Kearins.  The other individual was 18-year old Christopher Cousins," said Edward Hopkins of the Harford County Sheriff's Office.

Cousins told police that he and his friend had gone to the field to meet some people, but he didn't indicate why.

"When they arrived there, these people showed up and shot them multiple times.  The other victim, Mr. Kearins, who also was shot multiple times was not conscious at the scene.  There was emergency care rendered to him and he was subsequently transported to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased shortly after his arrival."

State Police airlifted Cousins to the Shock Trauma Center where they say he's in guarded condition, but expected to survive.

Investigators are hoping that the lone surviving victim saw his would-be killers and can ultimately identify them.
