According to the Harford County Sheriff's Office, it all started around 3:30 p.m. Travis Bradley's girlfriend called about him being suicidal and possibly armed with a handgun.
"About 4 o'clock, the individual in the house came out onto the back deck. He came out onto the back deck with what was described by our deputies as an assault rifle," Maj. William Davis said.
Davis said Bradley fired two rounds at deputies. Davis said Bradley's girlfriend also told deputies Bradley was a soldier in the military and was suffering from PTSD.
After Bradley fired those initial shots, Davis said the approach changed, and the Special Response Team was called in.
"The individual in the house indicates to our deputies as well as other individuals that he was talking to by phone that he planned to shoot it out with the officers that were outside of the house," he said.
It was around 6:30 p.m. that Bradley came outside again.
"This individual came out of the house and presented himself in a threatening manner. Gave indication that he was possibly armed, causing our deputies to fire," Davis said.
The shooting comes just weeks after two sheriff's deputies were killed in the line of duty.
"I would say it would have to be in the back of all of our deputies' minds because it certainly is so close to what happened back then and that is always going to be in our minds... I don't think it would make them have a short release. I think it would probably make them more cautious however I don't think it's going to be something that's going to make them fire quicker or things like that," Davis said.
Davis said it turns out Bradley was not armed when he was shot, but deputies thought he might have explosives on him or in the house based on what he told negotiators.
Investigators found three guns in the house, including a rifle and a handgun.
The three deputies who fired at Bradley are on administrative leave pending an investigation.
