An Aberdeen woman was sentenced today to 25 years in prison for abusing and neglecting her infant daughter, according to the Harford County State’s Attorney.
Kayla Marie Barker, 25, was found guilty by a jury in January for abusing her 9-month-old daughter. Barker repeatedly beat her on the head, causing multiple skull fractures. She injured the child because she would not stop crying.
Upper Chesapeake Medical Center treated the child before she was admitted to Johns Hopkins pediatric intensive care unit. Barker delayed taking her daughter to the hospital for several hours in an effort to avoid questioning by Child Protective Services.
The delay resulted in an additional conviction for child neglect. Judge Stephen M. Waldron set a five-year concurrent sentence.
The child’s paternal aunt, who now has custody of the child, spoke at the sentencing hearing. She advised the court that the child, now two-and-a-half years old, does have developmental and behavioral problems as a result of the abuse.
