A bald eagle shot on the 4th of July has died, wildlife officials said.

The bald eagle was found near Swan Harbor Farm in Havre de Grace on the 4th.

Natural Resources Police responding to the scene put the eagle in an air conditioned cruiser until a wildlife expert arrived.

The Susquehannock Wildife Society said in a statement that despite efforts to rescue and treat the eagle, it had to be “humanely euthanized”  due to severe injuries from a gun shot wound.

Shooting a bald eagle is a federal crime that carries a maximum fine of $250,000 or two years imprisonment.

Anyone with information is asked to call Maryland State Police.
