An 18-year veteran with the Aberdeen Police Department is now in jail after being accused of stealing prescription drugs from the department.

Police say it went on from February 2016 to August 2017.

State prosecutors say Lt. Daniel Gosnell took oxycontin, heroin, fentanyl, even cocaine and other drugs from inside prescription drug drop boxes and the evidence room.

Police say they were tipped of Gosnell's moves and started an internal investigation then turned it over to Maryland State Police for transparency.

"The amount of urine analysis and drug testing that's taken place has increased exponentially from the original template that the city followed under. It's a specific policy that's enhanced the police department's ability to track and test officers in the department to ensure all of our members of the department are drug free," Lt. Will Reiber said.

Police say 235 separate pieces of evidence were either taken or tampered with. Now the chief here says he's had to revamp and reinforce stricter policies on access to both the evidence room and the prescription drug box.

Gosnell is still an employee with the department since those charges were filed on Wednesday, however, his arresting powers have been removed.
