A Lusby man who operated a wildlife rehabilitation facility was found guilty of illegal drug possession and one count of practicing veterinary medicine without a license Thursday in Calvert County District Court.
Ronald Gene Wexler, 68, was given a 6-month sentence and was ordered to pay a $500 fine for practicing without a license. Judge Michelle Saunders also ordered three years of unsupervised probation.
Wexler was arrested by Maryland Natural Resources Police in June after a year long investigation of his facility, Orphaned Wildlife Rescue Center, Inc.

In August 2015, investigators searched his center and found animals that should have been euthanized due tot he extent of their injuries, animals which had been operated on by Wexler. Investigators also found a host of drugs, including Oxycodone, Demerol, Pentobarbital and Fentanyl. Wexler did not have a license or prescription for the drugs.
Wexler operated under the nickname "Doc" and referred to himself as a veterinarian on his website, however he does not have a veterinary license.
