Deputies shoot suspect who ambushed them

CENTREVILLE, Md. (WMAR) - Maryland State Police are investigating a shooting that involved a Centreville officer.

Police say a 25-year-old Michael J. Schluderberg escaped from the Eastern Correctional Institute Pre-Release Center earlier Wednesday. He was serving a three year sentence for assault. Before entering prison his last known address was in Baltimore.

After breaking out of the facility, officials say Schluderberg stole a small caliber gun and broke into a home. He was then reportedly tracked to a bean field on Route 301 when officers say he jumped from the field and ambushed them, firing several shots from his gun.

Officials say Schluderberg then  ran to a nearby farm house on Tanyard Road, where deputies caught up with him. He was shot by officers, and he was taken to a  local hospital where he later died.

According to a press release issued by Maryland State Police Thursday, a handgun was found in the field and is believed to be the gun Schluderberg stole from a Carvel Place Road home. Investigators say they also found what appeared to be a suicide note near his body.

Before entering prison, Schluderberg's his last known address was in Baltimore.

No officers were hurt in the shooting.
