Former Pocomoke City police chief Kelvin Sewell was convicted of criminal misconduct in office in the circuit court for Worcester County Thursday.
According to authorities, the jury deliberated for 40 minutes before returning a split verdict.
Sewell and former Pocomoke City police lieutenant Lynell Green protected a fellow Mason from hit-and-run charges after he hit two parked vehicles and fled the accident scene in November of 2014.
The two were charged with criminal misconduct and conspiracy.
The jury acquitted Sewell of the conspiracy count.
Judge D. William Simpson sentenced Sewell to three years which was suspended in favor of three years’ probation and a fine of $1,000.00.
Green's trial is scheduled for December 19, 2016.
