The former Baltimore city police officer accused of killing his neighbor in April of last year has also been charged with possession of child pornography.

Charles "Pete" Richter, 66, of Stevensville, is set to stand trial next week on murder charges stemming from the shooting of his neighbor, Mark Xander.  On Monday, a slate of child pornography charges were added to his record.

According to court filings in the Circuit Court of Queen Anne's County, Richter is facing 14 counts of possession of child pornography.  The offense date is listed as April 3, 2011, the day Xander was also shot and killed following an argument about his dog. The pornography charges are considered an unrelated case although they stem from evidence found in Richter's home during the investigation into Xander's death.

According to the Queen Anne's County Office of the Sheriff, there was a statute of limitations on the pornography charges that required they be filed within a year of the offense.

Richter is facing first degree murder and assault charges in the Xander case.  His trial for those crimes is slated to begin next week.  Richter was a police officer in Baltimore in the 1970's and 1980's.  He also ran two failed campaigns to become the sheriff of Queen Anne's County.
