A St. Mary’s County woman was sentenced to two years in prison for stealing money from developmentally disabled patients at an Eastern shore facility.
Anita Nelson, 42, of Great Mills pleaded guilty to a charge that she stole personal funds from patients at Bay Community Support Services (Bay-CSS), a residential facility that cares for people with intellectual and physical challenges. In addition to providing housing, Bay-CSS manages personal funds for some of their residents. Nelson was responsible for providing oversight of operations at several of Bay-CSS’s residential homes.
A judge sentenced Nelson to two years’ incarceration, all suspended, and 80 hours community service. She was also placed Nelson on two years’ probation and barred her from working in a federally funded health care program for five years.
The missing funds, which totaled close to $2,700, were withdrawn from residents' accounts between March 2015 and August 2015.
