ELKTON, Md. - A 19-year-old man was killed and five barely 20-somethings are accused of murder—over a mason jar of marijuana.
Authorities in Cecil County's Sheriff's Office said five people broke into Kenneth Lee Curry's apartment, in the 300 block of East Cecil Avenue, on Sept. 24. It was 12:30 a.m. when they barged in wearing masks, and brandishing handguns.
They demanded Curry "hand over the stuff," witnesses later told investigators.
One of the suspects whipped Curry in the face with the butt of his handgun, according to a release.
The 19-year-old wrestled the gun away from the suspect and managed to get off a shot.
Then another shot was fired.
The bullet struck Curry's torso. Police would later find him lying face down in his apartment. He was pronounced dead at Christiana Hospital in Delaware.
But Curry wasn't the only one who went to Christiana Hospital that night.
Investigators determined it was Justin Leander Jones, a 25-year-old from Aberdeen, who hit Curry with his gun," the release states. Leander matched a witness description and was later picked up by police while getting treatment from his own gunshot wound.
Another suspect, William Lee Dobson, a 21-year-old from Rosedale, had reportedly purchased drugs out of the apartment prior to the robbery. Dobson texted his friends and left the door open to the building, investigators said.
The five had planned the crime and purchased masks the day before to conceal their identity. Authorities however managed to track down the five suspects in different areas of Cecil County throughout the day, according to Cecil County Sheriff's Office officials
The suspects are:
Tabitha C. Nelson (white female, 23 years of age, 100 block of Hollis Circle Elkton, Maryland)
William L. Dodson (white male, 21 years of age, 8800 block of Pennsbury Place Rosedale, Maryland)

Devon T. Ellwood (black male, 18 years of age, 200 block of Mackall Street Elkton, Maryland )

They are charged with murder in the first- and second-degree, assault in the first- and second-degree, armed robbery and possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony. The suspects were committed to Cecil County Correctional Facility on no bond, online court records show.
An arrest warrant has been issued for Leander who remains in treatment for his injuries. He was last listed in critical condition.
