Police say a car broken down on the side of I-95 ended up helping police catch a suspect in a Cecil County robbery.
When a knock came on the door of the home in North East one recent Sunday afternoon, the young girl who answered it wasn't exactly opening the door to a stranger.
"The nine year old who answered the door was actually the daughter of the victim and we believe that she also knew the suspect," said Elena Russo of the Maryland State Police.
Police say 48-year old Lawrence Dean Lucas whipped out a weapon right in front of the young girl and robbed her father at gunpoint.
"Police believe he pulled a gun to the man's head and demanded all the money he had,” said Russo, “He handed over a little over $500 that day."
There would be no mystery identifying the suspect since the victim knew the man who robbed him.
It was only a matter of time until police could track him down.
It's too bad that the suspect didn't use the loot from the robbery to address some mechanical issues with his getaway car, because ultimately that would lead to his capture.
"The 48-year old man, (the) suspect in this case, fled the scene in his Jeep,” said Russo, “A few days later, his Jeep broke down on 95 when two troopers from the JFK Barrack stopped to help this guy and come to find out---they had stopped a wanted fugitive."
Now, Lucas faces a series of charges including armed robbery, assault and reckless endangerment, and he's being held in the Cecil County Detention Center with his bond set at $150,000---all, because he allegedly ripped off someone he knew for $500.
