A Dundalk woman is facing attempted murder charges after she allegedly shot and wounded her husband and 7-year-old son Saturday night.
Officers said 30-year-old Erica Nicole Shifflett of the 7300 block of School Avenue, arrived to the home to try to take her 7-year-old son from the location when a domestic dispute broke out in front of the home.
When the husband, Russell Kenneth Shifflett III, 31, tried to take the boy back into the home, the woman pulled out a gun and fired one shot in the direction of her husband and son, according to police.
Larry Weber lives across the street from where the incident occurred. He said he was just arriving home sometime around 7 p.m. when he spotted a commotion.
“So I went over to the porch where Kenny and the son were shot to see if I could help them out any but they already had a tourniquet on his arm. He got shot through the wrist, the father did, and then the little boy got shot through the wrist and the side,” Weber said.
“This is a horrific incident. They were arguing over the son, she wanted to take him, he didn't want her to take him and instead of working it out between them she pulled out a gun and started shooting,” said Cpl. John Wachter of the Baltimore County police department.
According to court documents several family members were at the house and tackled Shifflett to the ground after she fired the weapon.
“After they saw this they grabbed her, took her to the ground and held her until police arrived,” Wachter said.
Witnesses told police the couple were having marital issues.
“From what I understand, he made her go down to her dad's house. I guess they weren't getting a long too good, so she went to come up and take her kid,” Weber said.
The father and son were rushed to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The husband was treated and released from Johns Hopkins Medical Center. As of Monday afternoon, the boy remains hospitalized but according to staff he's in good condition.
On Monday, Erica Shifflett was in the hospital for undisclosed reasons. Police said it wasn't because of anything that happened at the scene or the precinct. She's being guarded by Baltimore County police.
Shifflett has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, two counts of first and second degree assault, and other related charges, according to police.
Shifflet told police she didn't intend to shoot anyone. Police also recovered a .38 caliber revolver from the scene.
This incident continues to be investigated by the Baltimore County Violent Crimes Unit.
