TOWSON - A Baltimore County woman will spend the rest of her life in prison for being the mastermind of a murder-for-hire plot that led to the death of her husband.
Karla Porter, 51, was sentenced Monday in Baltimore County Circuit Court to life in prison plus 40 years, for hiring a hitman in 2010 to kill her husband, Walter Ray Porter, outside the Towson Hess gas station he owned.
Six people have been convicted for various roles in the plot.
Baltimore County State's Attorney Scott Shellenberger originally sought the death penalty in Karla Porter's case, but knew that wouldn't be a viable option after the state outlawed capital punishment this year.
"We're very pleased with the sentence handed down today," Shellenberger said. "It highlights the hard work of the Baltimore County Police Department and this office to bring everyone to justice that was associated with this case. Mr. Porter's family was also pleased with the outcome of this case and the others associated with it."
