The Baltimore County man accused of murdering the mother of his twin daughters and kidnapping one of the girls, setting off a multi-state amber alert, pleaded not criminally responsible last week in Baltimore County Circuit Court.
Timothy Virts, 38, of Dundalk was indicted in April on nine charges including first-degree murder and kidnapping in connection with the killing and abduction.
Last week, his lawyer entered a plea of not criminally responsible by reason of insanity, online court records show.
The charges stem from the March murder of Bobbie Jo Cortez. Police were called to her Dundalk home where they found her dead and learned one of her 11-year-old daughters was missing.
The girl was found with Virts in a motel in South Carolina.
Virts faces a maximum penalty of life in prison if he is found guilty of murdering Cortez.
