"The victim had come to the restaurant to pick up a friend of his who worked there,” said Cpl. John Wachter, “That friend had told a couple of disorderly people to leave the restaurant. Those people told his friend that, 'Hey, we're going to wait outside for you when you get off work.'"
Police have now arrested 16-year-old Tayquan King in connection with the shooting.
He had just celebrated his 16th birthday about a week earlier.
At his bail review hearing on Wednesday, he was described as a Parkville High School sophomore who excels as a student and as an athlete, participating in lacrosse and football.
His mother told the judge he's a good kid and she didn't know what happened that could have landed him in this trouble, but she left all the talking a man accompanying her out of the district courthouse.
"The fact that the person that got shot... It was an accident, because he wasn't even involved. It was accidental," he said.
Prosecutors, however, say there was nothing accidental about King and his associates allegedly lying in wait for the restaurant worker outside the mall, and they claim he fired several shots at the man they had threatened, hitting his friend in the foot with one of the bullets by mistake.
"He faces attempted murder charges and well as some related charges such as assault," Wachter said.
Police arrested King yesterday while he was at a separate court hearing in Baltimore for a drug charge that was ultimately dropped.
Despite a plea to have him turned over to the Charles Hickey School so that he could continue his education, bail was denied and he remained at the Baltimore County Detention Center as of Wednesday evening.
