TOWSON, Md. - Baltimore County Police are warning residents to be on the lookout for those seeking to steal airbags.
Police spokesman Cpl John Wachter said most of the reported incidents have occurred in the Pikesville, Towson, and Cockeysville precincts. Among the vehicles being targeted for the thefts are vehicles produced by Nissan, Honda, and Acura.
“These are not your typical car thieves,” Wachter said. “They are targeting certain vehicles, seeking out airbags and selling them for a profit.”
Wachter said suspects are breaking windows to access vehicles. Once inside, the suspects damage the dashboard and steering wheel to remove the airbag. The suspects then sell the air bags which range in price from $700 to $900.
The Cockeysville precinct has been hit especially hard, Wachter said. Through April 28, that precinct has reported 78 thefts from auto, which includes 12 airbags being stolen, according to Baltimore County police figures.
Wachter said there is only so much people can do to prevent their vehicles from being targeted.
“Vigilance is really the best precaution people can take to reduce their chances of having their airbags stolen,” Wachter said. “Be careful where you park your vehicle and don’t hesitate to call police if you see something suspicious.”
