Several homes have been broken into in recent weeks in the Pikesville area, Baltimore County Police said.

Police said thieves are targeting homes with unlocked doors. The burglaries happened in the 7900 block of Ivy Lane, 3600 block of Phillips Drive and 3400 block of Midfield Road between Oct. 15 and 17, and thieves took purses or car keys.

In some cases, the keys were used to steal cars.

In a burglary in the 3600 block of Philips Drive, the suspects took a check and then tried to cash it at an M&T Bank on Smith Avenue.

Officers with the Pikesville precinct are conducting patrols in the affected areas.

The Baltimore County Police Department issued the following safety tips:
  • Lock all doors and windows at night.
  • Make sure alarms systems are armed at night.
  • Make sure to lock all vehicle doors.
  • Do not keep keys in vehicles.
  • Do not keep keys, purses or other valuables near doors or windows.
