Baltimore County Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting on Grovethorn Road in Middle River Saturday night.

Just before 7 p.m., Baltimore County Police responded to a home in the 200 block of Wampler Road for an assault. A preliminary investigation indicated that the suspect, an adult male, assaulted a man and a woman at the location with a hatchet.

Both victims were transported to an area hospital for treatment and are expected to survive. The woman has since been released.

The suspect was later located in the basement of a home in the 300 block of Grovethorn Road. An officer was led inside by a relative, according to police. When the officer entered the basement the suspect appeared from under the steps while holding a large knife he used to cut his neck.

Police say officer shot the suspect once after he dropped the knife but then lunged toward the knife and officer.

He was transported to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center for treatment, where he is listed in critical but stable condition.

The officer will be placed on administrative status while the incident is reviewed. Police say the victims did not know the suspect.
