From his townhome on St. Monica drive in Dundalk, Brad Newlin heard the distinctive sound of gunshots on Sunday afternoon, but if the suspected gunman, Gary Patterson, thought we would make a quick getaway, he thought wrong.
"The shooter came out the front door and the police were already here cause I had already called and they had him," Newlin said.
Moments later, investigators discovered Patterson's girlfriend inside the home where she'd been left for dead.
An ongoing domestic dispute may have served as the motive, according to police.
"The victim's 50-year old estranged boyfriend had come to the house,” said Cpl. John Wachter of the Baltimore County Police Department, “He broke into the house through the front window and then went through the house looking for her. When he found her, he shot her multiple times."
What Patterson could not have foreseen was that his girlfriend was not alone.
We're told her daughter and her fiance were visiting, and the younger man single-handedly disarmed the shooter leaving his mark on the suspect's face in the process.
He showed up at the next door neighbor's back door calling out for help about the time police had nabbed the gunman in the front yard.
"He came through the house and he had the weapon on him that he took from the shooter, and the smartest thing he could have done --he dropped it right in my living room,” said Newlin, “He said, 'I'm putting this right here.' I said, 'That's very smart', because he was covered in blood as well and if had come outside while the guns were already drawn, God only knows what would have happened."
Patterson is being held with no bond at the Baltimore County Detention Center and he's facing a series of charges including two counts of attempted first-degree murder.
Even though his girlfriend suffered four gunshot wounds to the upper torso, she is expected to make a full recovery.
