Parents of boy, 6, left unattended in motel charged with child abuse

TOWSON, Md. - The parents of a 6-year-old boy left unattended in a Towson motel last week have been charged with child abuse and other related charges, Baltimore County police said.

Jessica Lynn Maranto, 33,  and Brandon Joseph Johnson, 32, both of the 8700 block of Loch Bend Drive have been charged with first-degree child abuse, child neglect and related charges. Both were denied bail at a review hearing Thursday. 

Police said on Aug. 7 at 8:26 a.m., officers responded to a room at the Welcome Inn for an injured person. A maintenance worker had entered the room because of a complaint about bed bugs and found a small child on the floor of the kitchen.

The boy was transported to an area hospital for treatment. It was later learned that the child was and suffering from severe malnutrition. The child remains hospitalized.


Editor's Note: This story has been updated to reflect the outcome of a bail review hearing. Both Johnson and Maranto were initially held on $200,000 bail. At a review hearing Thursday, a judge denied the couple bail.
