A Maryland Transportation Authority police officer was arrested and charged with theft from the FOP Lodge where he was once president.

Baltimore County Police said Cpl. Shane Schapiro, 36, was charged with theft from $10,000 to under $100,000. He turned himself in Wednesday afternoon and was released on $10,000 bail.

Schapiro was once president of the FOP Lodge 34 in Middle River, which represents MdTA officers, police said.

Police said there were discrepancies while Schapiro was president and the union brought the matter to county police and prosecutors.

Authority police spokesman 1st Sgt. Jonathan Green says Schapiro has been suspended without pay.

A phone number for Schapiro is disconnected. Attorney Mike Davey says the FOP won't comment.
