Police responded to the house on Rocky Brook Court in Windsor Mill shortly before midnight on Easter Sunday after reports of possible gunfire.
"I had my sliding glass doors to my deck open and I heard what could have been identified as gunshots or fireworks... about four or five... six or seven in succession," said Rhonda Smith.
Police discovered 39-year-old Michael Jefferson, Jr. who had died from multiple gunshots, and detectives returned to the neighborhood Monday searching for any clues the killer may have left behind.
"We can say there was no sign of forced entry and they are looking at whether it's possible that this crime involved people that knew one another," said Elise Armacost of the Baltimore County Police Department.
News of Jefferson's death struck hard for the longtime resident's many friends in the community.
"I know when they put yellow tape out, someone got murdered," said Leonard Smith.
Smith works two jobs, and when he returned home from one of them early Monday morning, he said he feared the worst when he saw police coming and going from the home of his football tailgating buddy.
"I walked in and saw his house open, and I had a feeling,” said Smith, “It was like, 'Why did they go into his house?'"
"When we came to the neighborhood, he was one of the first people that welcomed us,” added Smith’s wife, “So as a neighborhood, we are grieving, because he was a good guy."
Friends say Jefferson worked with children in Howard County.
