BALTIMORE, Md. (WMAR) - Milton Borowy says when he got to the hospital he saw his son breathing and was overcome with relief.
The father of 17-year-old Daniel Borowy rushed to the University of Maryland R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center Monday. The teen was transported there by helicopter after being shot in the cafeteria of Perry Hall High School on the first day of the school year.
Milton Borowy says he knows little about how the incident unfolded, and he is more concerned with Danny's health.
"All I know about what happened is that Danny was shot," Milton said. "At this point and time, that's all I really need to know."
Milton said his biggest fear was that Danny would not be breathing when he got to the hospital. According to his mother and father, Danny Borowy hears what everyone tells him and is scared. Danny is still in critical condition. Doctors say he suffered a bruised lung and a fractured rib. His chest muscles are damaged, and there is a hole in his chest.
Investigators with the Baltimore County Police Department say Danny was shot in the back by 15-year-old Robert Gladden. They say Gladden brought a broken down shotgun to school that he assembled in a bathroom and brought into the cafeteria after an item was thrown in his direction during the first lunch period of the day. The shooting, described as "random act" by officials, resulted in a lockdown of the school and the early dismissal of Perry Hall High School and Perry Hall Middle School.
Gladden has yet to appear in bond court. Officials say he is still undergoing mental evaluation. Students at Perry Hall High School spoke to ABC2 News reporters after the shooting and said Gladden was often bullied.
"...The only comment that I guess I'll make is that obviously he's a troubled young man," said Milton Borowy. "I hope that he gets the help that he needs. I'm not trying to be forgiving, cause we're hurting. My son is hurting."
Milton Borowy said he is leaving justice in the hands of the legal system.
