A 15-year-old is in police custody after a string of carjackings in northwest Baltimore on Sunday and investigators say there may be more arrests coming.
Police say it all happened early Sunday in the Park Heights neighborhood where someone came up to two people with a gun and demanded they give up their car, but little did they know it was the beginning to a series of thefts.
“Those crimes, to steal cars and to do stuff like this, this is not for this generation," Rabbi Yuval Noff said.
He says news of carjackings in his neighborhood is frustrating for an otherwise peaceful community.
Baltimore police say a 15-year-old and a group of others stole several cars throughout the day on Sunday.
“An armed car jacking is a violent crime and we’re just, easily seconds away from it becoming a shooting," T.J. Smith, chief of media relations, said.
It started at about 1:30 a.m. with reports of a car jacking on Park Heights Avenue, then three more at different points throughout the day.
“Crimes like carjackings, especially, armed carjackings wreak havoc on a community in a very short period of time," Councilman Isaac Yitzy Schleifer received calls from concerned neighbors about the robberies.
He learned of one of the incidents minutes after it happened.
“These three guys came up to him and put a crowbar up to his door, preventing him from closing his door. They took off with that car which was a Chevy Impala," Councilman Schleifer said.
Police say the 15-year-old un custody has a lengthy arrest record already -- committing other violent crimes throughout the year.
He most recently had a warrant for taking off his ankle monitor two weeks ago.
“This 15-year-old suspect was, actually, out after committing at least 4 offenses earlier this year alone from January, February, and March," Smith said.
A concern Rabbi Noff says needs to be fixed.
“Go to work, earn money, work $10, $15, $20 an hour, go get an education. It’s not good that Baltimore will have an image all over the world as a crime city. We need to come to a point to lift up the city," he said.
Police believe this may be part of a gang, but didn't say the group's name or its motive.
The 15-year-old was arrested last night on Eutaw Street.
Police expect to make more arrests in this case.
