His place of work, the Park Terminal building on Fulton Avenue in West Baltimore, had become a crime scene, as Michael Brinkley looked on from across the street trying to make sense of the fatal shooting.
"I can't see... I couldn't think of nothing like that happening. The atmosphere in there isn't like that," said Brinkley, "Any family would be suffering at this point in time---a co-worker, work place violence."
When police responded to a report of a shooting at the city public works facility about 8:30 in the morning, they discovered 34-year old Darrin Ulysses Johnson Jr. suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in a locker room.
The gunman was nowhere to be found, but investigators soon developed a person of interest, Cipisirono Cole, 47. He is now wanted for murder. Cole one of the victim's co-workers, he remains at large.
"It really doesn't matter if it was a personal or professional argument,” said T.J. Smith of the Baltimore City Police Department, “A bad guy took the life of somebody at work and the person was at work. That's the important part of get across that they were at work making a living and somehow the bad guy decided to end this dispute with a gun."
We're told that locker room, where water and sewer crews clean up, is located in the basement and trucks are dispatched from there to job sites throughout the city.
Rumors of an active gunman on the loose inside the facility proved to be unfounded bringing a sense of relief to as many as a hundred workers who had been frozen in place throughout the building.
"It was certainly a shock,” said City DPW Director Raymond Chow, “Both employees work for us and I know it's going to be a big blow to our department as a whole. So I guess now my focus is on my employees working for me right now and making sure everybody's well."
Public works officials say there had been no warning signs or previous incidents leading up to the shooting.
