Police are investigating what appeared to be a car accident but turned out to be the City's 14th homicide this year.
Around 4 a.m. police were called to the 100 block of E. Madison Street for a report of a car crash. When officers arrived they found an overturned car. Police found a 28-year-old man inside the car who had been shot multiple times.
"It is shocking that such crime would go on around these parts," said neighbor Leonard Maxey. "I mean, I rarely hear about things going on like that around here."
Police tape still marks the area on E. Madison Street where it happened. Not far away, pieces of a side view mirror lie on the sidewalk.
"I'm completely taken aback by the violence that just occurred," Maxey said.
The victim, Ricky Mellerson, was taken to an area hospital where he later died.
