A few pieces of police tape are the only signs of the deadly encounter that happened early Monday morning. Baltimore Police were called just before 4:30 a.m. after people heard gunshots.
Investigators say the victim and a friend were walking along York Road near Winston Avenue when two men came up and demanded money. One of the would-be-crooks was armed, and when the pair refused to hand over their cash, a struggle broke out.
"The confrontation that happened appears to be an attempted robbery,” said Baltimore City Police Chief T.J. Smith. “And the victim tried to fight off the gun and the suspect fired the gun striking the victim."
The 66-year-old man was hit once in the chest. He was rushed to the hospital, but didn't make it.
"It doesn’t appear anything was taken, that’s what makes it more tragic that nothing was taken from the victim, at least it doesn’t appear that way at this point and time," Smith said.
Investigators don't have many more details about the fatal shooting, and don't have good descriptions of the duo involved.
We're told the victim and his friend live in a nearby recovery house, but it's not clear where they were headed when the attack happened.
"So at this time we have two bad guys out there that have a reckless disregard for human life,” said Smith. “And we tell people all the time, if you’re a victim of anything like a robbery, especially, comply, give up the property because it's not worth your life."
Officers say the suspects ran away down Winston Avenue.
