A 64-year-old man was robbed at gunpoint, stabbed and maced inside a Baltimore park.
Baltimore Police said the attack and robbery happened inside of the Wyman Park Dell on N. Charles Street. After taking away the victim's keys and money, the suspects fled on 29th Street.
Tuesday evening, people played with their dogs or went for a run through the park, all of it under the watchful eye of security.
"Everybody’s pretty peaceful here, and the dogs are peaceful," said Dave Morgan who walks his two dogs through the park often.
At 5 p.m. Monday evening, police said the victim was reading a book on a park bench when he was approached, first by one teenager, then surrounded by three others. One of the teens put a gun to the man's head while another showed him a knife.
He was punched, maced and stabbed twice before they made off with his belongings, police said. Police said they would be increasing their presence in the area.
"Thankfully we’re not talking about another homicide," said Lt. Jarron Jackson, a spokesman for the city police department. "This is not an instance where we’re talking about 2 a.m. in a dark alleyway. We’re talking about a guy sitting in the park reading a book."
While the bold nature of the attack did not deter people who frequent the park, some had reason for pause.
"To hear that someone was stabbed and that it was a male, too, is definitely very scary," said Camilla Akpari, a student at nearby John's Hopkins University. "I definitely won’t be walking alone, which is a bit scary to think about. It’s definitely going to change my schedule. I definitely won’t be walking past the park at night."
Police were able to track down the man's cell phone. It was found inside the park near the swings.
The suspects are believed to be teenagers, three males and one female:
- Male, 16-20 years old, dark tank top shirt, dark jeans, armed with a knife
- Male, 16-20 years old, no shirt, wearing white pants, armed with a hand gun
- Male, 16-20 years old, no shirt, wearing dark jeans, armed with a hand gun
- Female, 16-20 years of age, pink tank top shirt, blue jean pants
