Governor Hogan appeared in Baltimore City on Tuesday, addressing the crime and violence that's led to more than 300 murders in the city once again this year.
Hogan said he is starting a Maryland Criminal Intelligence Network which will focus on gangs and repeat offenders that he says are terrorizing Baltimore City.
As part of the initiative, Hogan is directing the Maryland State Police, Maryland Transit Administration, Maryland Transportation Authority, and Maryland Capitol Police to help Baltimore Police in serving high priority warrants. 200 parole and probation officers are also helping Baltimore Police.
Governor Hogan also announced that he has an agreement from the US Marshals office to conduct an aggressive sweep though Baltimore to serve warrants on violent offenders.
The focus on repeat offenders comes after Hogan says a majority of crime in the city stems from people who have multiple arrests. He added that the current efforts in Baltimore appear to be too focused on providing services to young people, and not on preventing the crime that's happening right now.
He is hoping that instead of getting a slap on the wrist and going back out onto the streets, criminals will be held accountable for their actions.
"If you do the crime, you will do the time," said Governor Hogan.
He also announced he will introduce three bills on the first day of the 2018 legislative session aimed at truth in sentencing and doubling the mandatory minimum sentence for gun offenders.
Hogan also plans to introduce a bill that will be tougher on gun laws in Maryland.
