Over six hours later, there's still a massive police presence on North Fremont Ave.
The crime scene has only gotten bigger over the course of the night as officers continue their search.
We have had to back up from the closed-off area several times as armed cars, K-9s, SWAT officers and a lot of other units go in.
"That Baltimore Police detective was just doing his job on behalf of this city, and that’s what he’s been doing for 18 years," said Baltimore City Commissioner Kevin Davis
Davis said around 5 pm, the veteran detective and a partner were following up on a homicide near Bennet Place and confronted a man acting suspiciously. Not long after, Davis says that man shot one of the detectives.
"This callous, coward with a gun in his hand, shot a cop in the head tonight. There's no doubt in my mind that we’re going to identify him, we’re going to arrest him, we’re going to ensure that justice is done, " said Davis.
Investigators quickly locked down a huge surrounding area. Going house to house behind closed roads and police tape, not only to try and find the shooter, but also any other evidence that may lead them to him.
"It's just another terrible night in Baltimore City," said a resident of the area.
Larry Wallace is a Taxi Driver who says this is one of the most dangerous areas in the city.
"When I see that it’s like we don’t have anything coming if the police get shot, you can imagine the citizen. I’m a cab driver so I’m like ducking and dodging and don’t even know when a stray bullet gonna come," said Wallace.
People at the scene like Denia Holland have come across another homicide and more violence in a city in need of solutions
"It's gonna take us getting out of our comfort zones, starting to care about people, starting to care about our communities. We’ve gotta be active participants in order for things to get better," said Holland
There is already a $62,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.
