A barricade situation in South Baltimore came to an end Sunday morning when the person surrendered to police.
Just before 4 a.m., police were called to the 1600 block of Whetstone Way near East Fort Avenue. Police learned a person inside may have had access to a gun and for several hours refused to leave the building. Police decided to close off several streets near the Harris Teeter shopping center and parts of I-95.
“It’s actually a little concerning because this is a safe area and I want to remind people that stuff like this never happens here.” said John Flannery, a resident in the area.
On its Twitter page, Ft. McHenry National Park announced it would be closed until further notice because of the situation.
Melissa Howison, another resident of the area said, "It doesn’t necessarily make me frightened, I trust the people that are responsible for protecting our area and do feel generally safe in this area. "
According to Baltimore Police spokesman, T.J. Smith, this was not an active shooter situation and no shots were fired.
Tactical officers and police negotiators on the scene made contact with the person, who then surrendered peacefully just before 9 a.m. Sunday.
