Police said a Coppin State University police officer shot and killed a man who fired at a car driving near that Baltimore campus.
Baltimore Police spokesman T.J. Smith said the uniformed Coppin State officer was on patrol in an unmarked car Tuesday night when he saw a man leave the passenger side of a car in front of him and begin shooting at a car driving toward him.
The officer watched the incident unfold in front of him. The university officer shot the suspect who later died at an area hospital.
"The officer happened to be in the right place at the right time," Smith said. "This could have been a run and gun battle that could have ended up on the campus."
It's unclear if anyone was hit by the suspect's gunfire, though surveillance video captured the incident.
Coppin State University Police Chief Leonard Hamm supported his officers action, but declined to identify him Tuesday.
"We're in a dangerous business and he did what he was trained to do," Hamm said.
Police said the victim is not a Coppin State student and they did not recover a gun at the scene. Investigators are searching for the two vehicles involved, both of which drove away.
