A 21-year-old man has turned himself into police after being charged with 17 counts of animal cruelty for kicking and stomping puppies to death, Baltimore Police said.

Donald Yearwood turned himself into police Wednesday, police said.

The incident happened last month, when police said he kicked and stomped four puppies when they were making noise and he was trying to sleep. Witnesses told police Yearwood then threw the puppies down a flight of stairs, and there were several children in the house who saw it.

Police said Yearwood then put the puppies in a box and left.

At around 8 p.m. on Nov. 9, a group of children found four puppies inside a Dumpster in the 1200 block of Cambria Street.Three of the puppies were pronounced dead at the scene, and a fourth puppy was transported to an animal medical center, where he later died.

Detectives found a video from a surveillance camera in the area of Yearwood placing the puppies into a Dumpster, police said.

Detectives from Baltimore Police's Animal Abuse Unit learned that in October, officers were called to the same home, in the 3700 block of 10th Street, after an adult female pitbull bit a child.

The child suffered minor injuries from the dog bite, and Animal Control confiscated the adult pitbull along with six puppies that were about a week old. Animal Control Officers were unaware that there were four more puppies still inside the home.
