The Baltimore homicide rate surpassed 100 after police released an update on a 2007 shooting victim and murder Monday afternoon.

In August 6, 2007 officers were called to the 300 block of E. 21st Street for a reported shooting just after 4:15 p.m.

Police said when officers arrived on the scene they discovered a man, later identified as Derrell Smith, with a gunshot wound to his upper body. Smith was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

On August 29, detectives arrested Aaron Speaks and charged him with the shooting of Smith.

Speaks was found guilty of  attempted first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder and handgun related charges.

Earlier this year on February 2, police were notified that Smith died.

Police said the Medical Examiner's Office concluded in an autopsy that Smith died as a result of his injuries sustained in the 2007 shooting.

Shortly after police confirmed Smith's death marked the 100th homicide Monday, a man died in east Baltimore.

About 1:30 p.m. officers responded to a reported shooting on the 2000 block of E. Federal Street.

Police found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Detectives are investigating and asking anyone with information to contact police or Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7Lockup.

To date, there have been 101 murders in Baltimore City, according to police. At this time last year, 77 people were killed in Baltimore.
