BALTIMORE - Nine people were shot in Baltimore City this weekend including a man shot to death just blocks away from Preakness festivities.
The violence started Friday night when a man and woman walked into a hospital just after 10:15 p.m. with gunshot wounds. Police said they were shot in the rear of the 5900 block of St. Regis Road by an unknown man. The victims are in stable condition.
The shootings continued Saturday with a total of seven people shot including a homicide near Pimlico Race Course.
Police identified the victim of that shooting as James Lee Butler of Elmora Avenue. Butler was shot in the 3300 block of Belvedere Avenue around 4:30 p.m. He was taken to an area hospital where he died.
Authorities said the shooting was not related to the Preakness.
Six others shot Saturday include a man shot in Mt. Vernon in the 200 block of W. Monument Street . Police said the man was collecting rent money from a tenant Saturday afternoon when the suspect attempted to rob him and shot him in the leg.
The victim was taken to an area hospital for treatment. Police said he is listed in good condition.
Another man was shot in the head in east Baltimore late Saturday. Police responded to the 900 block of N. Caroline Street at 11:18 p.m. after callers reported hearing gunshots. When officers arrived they found a male victim shot in the head. The man is listed in critical condition, according to authorities.
