BALTIMORE - A man is dead and several people are hurt after police pursued a suspicious car Friday night.

Police said that officers assigned to the department's Monument Street Initiative, a unit that specializes in drug and gun offenders, tried to stop a green SUV in East Baltimore after they saw a passenger acting like they had a weapon.

Police said in a release that, "As officers followed the vehicle, it  collided with another vehicle and struck  a tree near the intersection of Broadway and  Biddle Streets. "  The driver of the SUV, identified as Tabbit Christian Sidney of the 1600 block of Aisquith Street died when his car stuck a tree. His passenger is listed in serious but stable condition. It is unclear if police activated sirens and lights during the pursuit or if speed contributed to the crash.

Police said they found a gun and two gun replicas in the car.

Occupants of the car hit by  Sidney were taken to Johns Hopkins and are listed in stable condition.

The Baltimore CIty crash team unit is investigating.
