Just before 6:30 Saturday night a female MTA police officer was flagged over by two people at the Cromwell Light Rail Station bus stop. The citizens asked the officer to intervene with a woman at the bus stop who was being disruptive.

The officer, a three-year veteran of the force, tried to speak to the woman who was uncooperative and began to choke the officer and pull her hair. Police say the officer could not break free and witnesses were unable to stop the assault. That’s when authorities say the officer fired one shot and hit the woman in the upper leg area.

Both the suspect and the officer were taken to local hospitals. The suspect was pronounced deceased. The officer is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The Anne Arundel County Police Criminal Investigations Division is handling the investigation.

Police have not released the name of the officer or the victim.
