Two 19-year-olds arrested in connection to a noose found hanging at an Anne Arundel County middle school have been charged with a hate crime, prosecutors said.

The Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney Officer said Conner Prout and John Haverman were charged with a hate crime after evaluating the underlying evidence regarding the noose found at Crofton Middle School on May 11.

A teacher found the noose hanging on an outdoor light fixture in front of the school.

Police identified the suspects with the help of surveillance video from the school. They were initially charged with trespassing, disturbing school operations and disorderly conduct.
