GLEN BURNIE, Md. - Police believe the woman killed inside a medical office building in Glen Burnie was targeted, according to a spokesman for the Anne Arundel County Police Department.
Police identified the victim as Christie Lynn Pelland, 43. Pelland owned an office-cleaning business and had been inside the Medical Arts Center of Glen Burnie when she was killed.
On Monday, patients and employees at the building, which is not far from Baltimore-Washington Medical Center, did not know what to think.
“It was a little chaotic at first, we had a couple patients who were wondering what was going on,” said Robin Wetzel, a medical receptionist who works in the building.
They were told to close down the offices while police began their investigation.
“I'm under the impression at the time they thought maybe it had happened and maybe the suspect was still in the area. So that was kind of a little scary,” she said.
They soon found out a woman had been killed, inside a gynecologist's office inside the building.
“One of the employees who was opening up the suites inside of his facility found an adult female dead inside of the office area,” said Justin Mulcahy, a spokesman for the Anne Arundel County Police Department.
Police have now identified that woman as 43-year-old Christie Lynn Pelland.
A relative tells ABC2 News she was beaten to death.
Police say there were no signs that the suspect broke into the building, indicating that Pelland may have let the person in herself.
“I hope the police investigators find out who the person behind this is so we can all feel safer,” said Dr. Mahesh Ochaney, a primary care physician with an office in the Medical Arts Centre of Glen Burnie.
Another doctor who has an office in the building says nothing was taken from his office, and police do not believe the murder happened as part of a burglary.
