Police: Grandmother caught stealing from teacher

GLEN BURNIE, Md. - The grandmother of an elementary school child was caught stealing a teacher’s wallet during an assembly at Marley Elementary School, according to a detailed account of the incident by Anne Arundel County Police officials.

Theresa Yvonne Sayles, 49, of the 100 block of Southbridge Drive in Glen Burnie, was charged with theft under $100 and disturbing school activities Tuesday, March 25.

School staff told police Sayles was discovered alone in an unoccupied classroom by a teacher. The teacher questioned why Sayles was in the room.

Sayles walked back to the cafeteria where the assembly was held.

“The [teacher] became suspicious and quickly realized her wallet was missing from the classroom,” the release from Anne Arundel County police states. “The victim then noticed the suspect holding her wallet in the cafeteria area and rummaging through it. The suspect was also observed removing something from the wallet and discarding the wallet into a trash can. The wallet was retrieved and money was missing from it.”

Sayles was banned from the property and advised that she would be further charged with trespassing if she returns.

School officials kept her from leaving until police arrived.
