Phone scam hits Annapolis residents

ANNAPOLIS, Md: -  Annapolis police are warming city residents of a potential phone scam.

Annapolis residents may have received a telephone call that was a recorded advertisement for a home alarm system.

This phone call may have showed a caller ID number of "410-268-9000" and displayed the name "City of Annapolis".

This phone call is not from the City of Annapolis or the Annapolis Police Department. This is a type of fraud known as spoofing.

If you suspect the person you are talking to of having spoofed their phone number you should immediately ask the person to allow you to call them back.

Let the caller know you will call the number displayed on your caller ID. If the caller appears hesitant or tries to get you to call a different phone number they may have spoofed the phone number.
