Owings man cited for leaving dog unattended in hot car

GLEN BURNIE, Md. - A 54-year-old Owings man was cited for leaving his dog unattended in a hot car Tuesday in Glen Burnie, Anne Arundel County police said.

Police said James Humphries, of the 9200 block of Easy Street, left his 7-year-old Scot terrier mix locked in his car more than a half an hour in the District Court parking lot, located in the 7500 block of Ritchie Highway.

A witness noticed the dog unattended in a pickup truck, with the window opened less than an inch before calling police. Police, who responded around 1:14 p.m., said the dog appeared to be in distress. With the temperature hovering around 90 and police unable to locate the owner, officers decided to break the truck’s window and rescue the dog.

Police said Humphries returned to the vehicle at 1:50 p.m. and was cited by police. The dog was evaluated by Animal Control and did not require medical attention. As a result, the animal was returned to the owner.
