Officer dragged while trying to make arrest on Ritchie Highway

SEVERNA PARK, Md. - What started as a traffic stop turned into a police pursuit through Anne Arundel County.

Around 9:30 a.m. Friday morning an officer checked on a suspicious person in a car near McKinsey Road and Governor Ritchie Highway in Severna Park.

According to police, the driver was wanted in Baltimore City but have not said why.  When the officer attempted to make the arrest, the driver resisted and dragged the officer.  Another officer arrived and the driver turned around and rammed a police cruiser to escape.

"The warrant was for an FTA for a traffic violation in Baltimore.  So a minor incident turned into a major incident because there are now several charges for assault on a police officer, which is a felony.  And he also hit a civilian vehicle," said Lt. TJ Smith, Anne Arundel Co. police spokesman.

Police followed and eventually caught the driver near Route 170 and Route 100 just south of BWI Airport.  He's identified as 25-year-old James Snyder.  He now faces several charges, including assault.  His passenger, 28-year-old Ian Brown, faces drug charges.

Police say their officers suffered minor injuries and expect to release more information on the driver later Friday afternoon.

A civilian driver was also hit but has minor injuries.
