Man charged after child ate methadone

SEVERN, Md. (WMAR) - Officers with the Anne Arundel County Police Department say a father has been charged after his 5-year-old son ate methadone.

According a press release from the Anne Arundel County Police Department, officers responded to the 1200 block of Reece Road in Severn for a report of a 5-year-old not breathing. They were advised that the child had accidentally taken methadone.

Patrol officers arrived on the scene and spoke with the child's father, who reportedly handed officers a bottle of pink liquid that he advised was methadone. Investigators say the methadone was purchased illegally.

EMS workers on the scene took over resuscitation efforts and revived the child, who was then transported to Baltimore Washington Medical Center.

Officials say further investigation revealed the presence of additional quantities of illegal drugs inside of the home and contact was made to the district Tactical Narcotics Team for assistance.

The team obtained a search and seizure warrant for the address and upon execution of the search warrant, investigators reportedly found cocaine, marijuana, heroin, and methamphetamine in sufficient enough quantity to indicate distribution.

Officers say they also found additional quantities of methadone, a loaded .357 Magnum and a .22 caliber rifle.

As a result, the child's father, Paul Kristopher Brooks, 28, of 1222 Reece Road in Severn, Maryland, was charged with possession with the intent to distribute cocaine, marijuana, heroin and methamphetamine; possession of methadone, cocaine, marijuana, heroin and methamphetamine; two counts of possession of a firearm in commission of a drug trafficking crime and one count of firearm accessible to a minor.

Charges are pending on an additional suspect, and the investigation is ongoing into possible child neglect charges.
