A former National Security Agency contractor appeared in court Friday charged with stealing government documents and secrets.

According to a court filing Thursday, federal prosecutors said they want to keep Harold Martin III behind bars as the case moves forward. The Washington Times reports those prosecutors want to prevent any compromises from “foreign adversaries” or Martin committing suicide once he is released from federal custody.

Martin is accused of stealing vast amounts of government documents and files, then storing them in his Glen Burnie Home.

He was arrested back in August 2016. Authorities called the theft "breathtaking in its longevity and scale."

The Justice Department said it anticipates bringing additional charges against Harold T. Martin III, including under the Espionage Act, which would expose him to far harsher penalties.
