Couple busted collecting cash for fake charity

GLEN BURNIE, Md. - A Baltimore couple is charged with fraud after they were caught collecting money for a bogus charity Friday night.

Matthew David Michalski, 25 and Amanda Ashley Miskimon, 21 are both facing fraudulent fundraising and theft charges for collecting money in front of a Glen Burnie Giant Foods for a charity they did not represent.

A vigilant citizen’s hunch led to the couple’s arrest after the donor asked for information about the charity. When the suspicious donor called the number on a flier, a cell phone rang in Michalski’s pocket.  The couple claimed they were collecting money for the ‘Support Our Troops Foundation.”

Police tracked down the phone number for the actual “Support Our Troops Foundation” and determined the couple were fake collectors using the money to support a drug habit. Police also discovered this was not the first time Mikalski and Miskimon had posed as phony collectors.

Police seized the money and arrested the couple.

Any person having contact with the suspects are urged to contact the Anne Arundel County Police Department at (410)-222-6145.
